If you’re new to skating, you may be a little confused right now. There are types of skateboards? Well, I’m here to tell you that not only do they exist, but they make a huge difference to your skating experience. So what kind of skateboard should you get?
I’m afraid there’s no correct answer to this and it’ll vary from person to person. But that doesn’t mean there’s not a correct answer for you. In fact, it’s highly likely that your situation will lend itself to one type over another. Finding the style of skateboard that’s right for you can be a challenge, which is why I want to help.
But first, let’s understand a little bit more about what you’re choosing between.

What Types of Skateboards Are There?
Whilst there are variants, there are four main types of skateboards. These are:
- Popsicle skateboards
- Cruisers
- Mini cruisers
- Longboards
Each one serves a different purpose, and each one is a valid choice. Depending on your style and priorities, one will likely be a better fit than the others. Popsicles are designed with tricks in mind, whereas cruisers are perfect for longer rides. Whilst non-skaters may see the differences as arbitrary, when you’re actually riding them, it can make a huge difference.
That’s where I come in! This quiz will ask you the necessary questions to figure out which will suit you best. If you want to know what type of skateboard is right for you, then simply answer honestly.
If you’re ever unsure of what to pick for a question, try to just choose something that feels neutral to you. I’ve tried to cover all bases with the questions, but it’s possible that you may feel that none of the answers are a good fit. In this situation just choose whichever is closest.

Take the Quiz!
#1. What will you mainly be using your skateboard for?
#2. Which of these matters most to you?
#3. How important are pop tricks to you? (Going airborne with your board)
#4. What kind of size are you looking for?
#5. Do you care about looking ‘cool’?
#6. How rough are the paths near you?
#7. Do you plan on skating transition? (Drop-ins, bowls, etc)
#8. What are you currently leaning towards?
#9. How long will you be skating for whilst commuting?
#10. Do you want your board to look the same as everyone else’s?

The classic board. A popsicle board is even on both sides, and looks symmetrical. When you think of a skateboard, this is what you’re picturing.
It may not always be the smoothest ride, but it’s a lot of fun, and you have so much flexibility for tricks.
My personal favourite! Cruisers are ideal if you’re looking for something that offers a smooth ride. These are perfect for commuting around, or just having lazy skate days.
Although they’re not as convenient for tricks, the riding experience more than makes up for that. They have a bit of a reputation for being used by older people, but I don’t see that as a negative.
Small and nippy, mini cruisers are ideal if space is a commodity for you. Just like the name suggests, they’re smaller than a conventional cruiser, in fact, they’re smaller than a regular board as well.
Mini cruisers aren’t great for long distances, or doing tricks on, but if you’re doing lots of short journeys, they can come in clutch.
Longboards for people who are skating purely for the joy of it. Unless you live somewhere, particularly flat and sparsely populated, they might not be so great for commuting, but they’re wonderful for longer journeys.
Even within longboards there’s a huge range of different shapes so make sure to do your research and find one that suits you. These things are built for speed, so make sure you wear a helmet.
The best of both worlds! If you like the classic shape and versatility of a popsicle board but want a smoother ride, you can always just put cruiser wheels on it.
Cruisers are bigger and thicker than regular wheels, and so they roll over cracks much more easily. If you don’t want to get something as large as an actual cruiser, then a popsicle board with cruiser wheels is a good compromise.
Conclusion
There you have it! I hope this quiz has helped you figure out which type of skateboard is right for you. Deciding what kind of skateboard to get is a tough decision. Of course, you’re not locked into it, but given the prices, you may have to wait a while before buying something else. As such, you want to try and get it right first try.
Please bear in mind that although this quiz can offer a suggestion, ultimately it’s your decision. If you disagree with the outcome, that’s perfectly fine. You should go with your gut and buy the type of skateboard that will bring you joy. And like I said, there’s nothing wrong with owning multiple types. Personally, I have a popsicle board and a cruiser. I also have three different sets of wheels – hard, medium, and soft. That way whatever I’m planning on doing during a skating session, I have a decent setup for it.
